Sustainably and Locally sourced Oak

Here at Grain Designs, we are very proud to source our oak from a local sawmill situated on Dartmoor National Park which is less than an hours drive away. We collect the Oak ourselves which is always a lovely excuse to get up on the moors for a good stomp or wild swim.

Why should I use timber?

Using timber helps to sequester carbon by preserving it beyond the natural life-cycle of a tree. Compare this to using oil-derived products such as plastic or energy heavy products like steel or concrete.

Timber is also a natural product to work with which has it's own inherent natural beauty. Its lifespan in use can often run into centuries and at the end of its useful life, it is recycled back into the natural carbon cycle.

Why should I use local timber?

Investing in local timber is beneficial for many reasons.

Firstly, you are supporting smaller local businesses and woodland owners that keep the traditional skills alive.

Secondly, by decreasing the number of miles your timber has to travel you are also reducing your carbon footprint.

Imported timber often comes from dubious sources, including clear-cut old-growth forests, however local timber is harvested as part of a century-long woodland management cycle.
